GO BACK

Rosa Parks, famous for her actions during the Civil Rights movement, went back to high school to earn her high school diploma much later in her life. At that time, not many black people in Montgomery, Alabama finished school. Thanks to this diploma, she was able to get a job at Maxwell Field, an air force base not far from her home. During the time Rosa worked on the military base, President Roosevelt decided that military bases could not be segregated. This meant that black workers and white workers could be together which wasn't the way it was outside the base. Segregation laws separated black people from white people in all public places. So, on the bus that Rosa had to take home, she had to ride in the back.

Who was the President during the time of segregation?
