Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. She lived with her grandparents until the age of 12 when she and her sister went to live with their parents in 1909. Amelia’s plans were to attend college, but when she came across four wounded World War I soldiers, she decided she wanted to become a nurse. Her dedication to helping people led her from nursing to work as a social worker. While she was a social worker she spent her free time teaching immigrant children the English language.

Her most noteworthy journey began in 1920 when she took a ten-minute plane ride that forever changed her life. From that point forward, she focused on earning a pilot’s license. Holding on to that dream, she challenged herself with a variety of jobs to earn the $1,000 needed for flying lessons.

Soaring to new heights, Earhart proceeded to excel as a pilot. She received a medal from President Herbert Hoover in 1932 for her solo flight across the Atlantic. She did not stop there. Earhart was the first female to fly from Hawaii to California.

Earhart’s contribution to history ended on July 2, 1937 when a frantic message was received by the U. S. Coast Guard. The message was from Earhart that she and the plane were in trouble. The plane went down and no one has ever seen Earhart again. Her devotion to creating change remains a legacy. This legacy emphasizes how setting dreams and achieving goals can be done through hard work and determination.

Which of the following was the major difference between Earhart’s career as a nurse and her career as a pilot?
