“This book offers multiple question types that challenge students. The questions vary within each strand so that students learn to use the skill in various applications. I especially like the Interpreting Meaning of Expressions section. This was well constructed and offered many questions.”

“The Lumos Learning workbook is something that I have been looking for to use to help prepare my students for the PARCC test. The workbook aligns to the standards in an easy to follow format! I plan on using this in my classroom for review and test prep.”

“This is not a textbook. It is a workbook that gives practice problems along with the explanation on how you get to the answer. The questions in this book will help you to assess where students are on different skills and standards. This book also offers a common core standards cross reference table.”

This will be a great added resource for my 3rd grade classroom. The questions and the explanations are clear for a typical 3rd grade student. The questions will be a great review at the end of the units to help the teacher know if the students have any weakness which need extra review. I look forward to using this book, as well as other Lumos Learning resources this year!

“My recent experience with Lumos Learning was exceptional! I first reached out to inquire about online PARCC-like problems and received an email response and follow up phone call in minutes. I spoke with one of their representatives, a former principal, Bonnie McRae about Common Core and PARCC alignment and received samples and demos for teachers the same day. Most importantly, Lumos Learning was able to work with us to meet our tight budget. It was refreshing to deal with a company that was incredibly efficient, competent, and willing to work with us to meet our bottom line. Thank you!”

“An attractive quality of this book is that the teacher can use it a variety of ways: homework piece, pre/post assessment piece, independent practice during station time!!! I love that this text offers access to online workbooks, videos, and apps as well! What a fantastic bonus! The answer key provides valuable detailed explanations for students to understand reason for a correct answer. As a teacher, I would recommend this text.”

“This book is a great resource with a lot of supplemental support. With the purchase of the book, you receive an online workbook, mobile apps for your students, link to descriptive sample problems, instructional video, and a Common Core Standards Cross-reference Table. The only suggested revisions would be: 1) list the standards on the pages of each concept along with the sample problem or sample problem link. Despite the above-suggested revisions, I plan on purchasing other workbooks by Lumos Learning. Note that this company’s online resources are just as great.”

“I am the instructional coach for a small, rural school district in southeast Missouri. I am always looking for test prep and instructional support that meet the needs of teachers and students. I discovered Lumos Learning while looking for standards-based, research-driven test prep.

My initial reaction to the materials described on the site was that they seemed to address the needs and concerns of the teachers in my district. The materials looked to be exactly the thing we needed, but facing severe budgets cuts, there was little hope we could have the program beyond the free trial. I explained our situation to Mr. Jeremy Brunton of Lumos Learning, I was able to tell him how much the teachers were impressed with the material. They came up with a proposal that not only met our needs but was affordable in spite of our dire financial situation.

The readiness of Lumos Learning to work with us for the good of our students is something we had not found in their competitors. There are many good products on the market, but in my opinion, Lumos Learning offers one of the best. More importantly, the company’s willingness to work within the confines of a district’s needs and resources offers the greatest benefit for students. As educators, that is what we want from our vendors, to know that we all have a stake in the success of our students, I would encourage any school or district to explore Lumos Learning as a way to enhance student learning and performance.”

Common Core Practice – 5th Grade English Language Arts: Workbooks to Prepare for the PARCC or Smarter Balanced Test

This book is helpful. I guess I didn’t read the description very well. It gives the problems to work out first, then the explanation in the answer key. I would have preferred the teaching first since I was looking for assistance to my child’s textbook, since it doesn’t do much teaching. I can work with it.

“This is the most closely related work or examples that I have found besides the PARCC assessment on our Department of Education website. I use these for small group and guided reading. Multiple examples for modeling and practice.”

“Common Core Practice – Grade 5 Math: This book is very useful for my daughter , packed with lot of questions. Very happy to have selected these books from all the ones available.”

Eneyan Shanmugham, Parent

“Grade 7 Math book provides parents with sample math questions that can help students become familiar with the format of standardized testing. Also, it can be used to reinforce skills and concepts that are taught in class.”

LeQuita Jones, Educator

“Thank you and I’m a new fan. I am a parent and I enjoy learning new things for myself, kids and for my relatives as well.”

Robyn Donnelly, Parent

“Common Core Practice 5th grade English/Language Arts I look forward to using this book to monitor my students understanding in Common Core testing format. The students will benefit from it greatly. This and the Math are excellent products!”

Linda Wiest, Teacher at Birmingham City Schools

“It had good practice multiple choice questions. I did find that some were misplaced and matched the CCSS domain headings and not the specific standard they were listed under, so I would use it with some caution. There aren’t places for explaining or modeling, it is all multiple choice, so it won’t meet your needs for conceptual or performance based practice. But overall, if you are looking for a workbook with multiple choice practice to keep students busy, then this would be for you. I would like to add that Lumos has sent their books to many teachers to review and improve, so they are one of the few companies constantly working to meet the needs of classroom teachers, and that is appreciated. I look forward to future versions.”

“As an educator I would recommend this, Summer Learning HeadStart, Grade 3 to 4: Fun Activities Plus Math, Reading, and Language Workbooks,
book for my students. As a parent I would also recommend other parents to consider this for their children as well. We all know that summer is what our students/children look forward to ,however, it can sometimes be detrimental as they lose a percentage of what they’ve learned over the course of a year. This workbook is a great source to to utilize over the summer and throughout the year as well.”

Adrienne Gibbons, Educator

“This is a great book to help children review the skills they learned in the previous years. There are questions for each of the common core standards. One Math and one Language/Reading Standard are covered each day. You can go through each lesson at your pace. It provides answers and detailed explanation of answers. This book could also be used to assist students who are currently struggling in the third grade. It provides additional practice items that can be used.”

Vivian Edwards Davis, Parent, Mississippi

“Simple and succinct way to review the essential topics that a third grader needs to master before entering fourth grade. This book is a painless way to do a small bit each day to keep academic skills fresh. It includes explanations of answers and simple 5-problem days. Worthwhile, but not overwhelming.”

Eric French, Parent

“I previewed the book Summer Learning Headstart (6-7) for Lumos Learning and am glad that I did! It is well written and covers commonly misunderstood standards. My 7th grader completed a portion to keep his mind fresh over the summer. I would recommend this for parents and educators alike to help lesson the summer back slide.”

Emmy Brown, Parent

“I am loving the Summer Learning Headstart book!
The content is rigorous, but not too complicated so that a parent or guardian could assist if needed.
I especially like the real world applications in the math section.
This is a must have for students to avoid the summer “brain drain”!”

Write Better Stories and Essays: Topics and Techniques to Improve Writing Skills for Students in Grades 6 – 8

“I found the topics section to be helpful for students who always have a difficult time getting
started..takes the guess work out of “”what do I write about.””
Mellisa Parish
Teacher
“The summer head start offers fantastic advice for both parents and children on how to keep busy during the summer holidays so that children don’t forget all that they have been taught during the school weeks. A lot of what children learn in schools can be lost due to inactive use of the brain which causes a slide in education. What this book offers is brilliant ways children can remain in education, no matter where they find themselves. By reading, writing
Not only does the book, offer ways to entertain the children while keeping their brain exercised, there are also wonderful maths exercises, essays that will keep their mind thinking and sharp on a daily basis and it has all been done for grade 7-8.
Also it provides a free app to download the Lumos StepUp app, which can be accessed to help home-school children and keep them from losing any of the skills they learned from school and make them even more exceptional when school resumes. I recommend this books to any parent looking to prevent and improve on their child’s learning.”
