What is the Georgia Milestone?

It is the comprehensive assessment system in Georgia for Grade 3 to high school and is based on the Georgia Learning Standards.

What was the earlier assessment conducted before the introduction of GMAS?

Before GMAS test was introduced, Previously, elementary and middle school students took CRCTs in five core subjects (English/language arts (ELA), math, reading, science, and social studies), and 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade students also took a separate writing assessment.

Why did Georgia adopt the Georgia Milestone Assessment System for assessment of grades K-12?

Georgia State adopted the GMAS as the method of assessment for grade K-12:

  • Since it is designed to show how well a student has met the learning expectations at his or her grade level. It provides information on students’ readiness for the next grade level. It shows how much progress is made from one grade level to the next.

  • Georgia Milestone assessments include open ended test items in addition to multiple choice which measures the student’s ability to apply the skills and knowledge that they have learned which was not there in the earlier assessment method.

  • Also, it has 4 Achievement levels instead of 3 as in the case of previous CRCT, EOCT and writing assessments.

    The test window for GMAS for the year 2019 is between April 8 to May 17, 2019.

    How many sessions are there for each GMAS test?

    There are 3 sessions for GMAS ELA and 2 sessions for GMAS Maths test.

    Session 1 is on a single day and Session 2 and 3 are given on a single day or over 2 days.

    What is the duration of GMAS test?

    The duration of the GMAS test is as below:

  • GMAS ELA Session 1 is for 90 minutes, session 2 and 3 are for 85 minutes each.
  • GMAS Maths session 1 is for 85 minutes and Section 2 for 85 minutes.

    No, there are no breaks between a single session of GMAS test.

    How are the performance levels assessed in GMAS?

    The performance levels for GMAS are:

  • Distinguished Learner: The students exhibit advanced proficiency and high level of learning and skills necessary as specified in Georgia Milestone Standards and are well prepared for next the next grade level or course and are prepared for college and career readiness.
  • Proficient Learner: The students exhibit proficiency and high level of learning and skills necessary as specified in Georgia Milestone Standards.
  • Developing Learner: The students exhibit partial proficiency and high level of learning and skills necessary as specified in Georgia Milestone Standards. The students need additional academic support to ensure success in the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
  • Beginning Learner: The students do NOT exhibit proficiency and high level of learning and skills necessary as specified in Georgia Milestone Standards.

    What is the calculator policy for GMAS test?

    The calculator policy for GMAS test is as follows:

  • Grades 3-5: No calculators allowed.
  • Grade 6: Basic four-function calculator (with square root and percentage functions allowed).
  • Grade 7-8: Scientific or basic calculator (with square root and percentage functions allowed).

  • The following devices/features are not allowed:

  • For basic and scientific calculators, devices that store text and/or that have QWERTY keyboards or typewriter-like keyboards.
  • Calculators that have programs stored in the memory other than those that are factory installed.
  • No cell phones, personal laptops, minicomputers, pocket organizers, iPods, and personal tablets.
  • Calculators with beaming capabilities.
  • Calculators with wireless communication technologies and/or Internet access.
  • Calculators with built in Computer Algebra System – CAS.
  • Calculators that make noise, have paper tape, or that have voice (**).
