O Captain! My Captain!Little Women
By Walt Whitman
andemsp;andemsp;O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
andemsp;andemsp;The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
andemsp;andemsp;The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
andemsp;andemsp;While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
(5)andemsp; But O heart! heart! heart!
andemsp;andemsp; O the bleeding drops of red,
andemsp;andemsp; Where on the deck my Captain lies,
andemsp;andemsp; Fallen cold and dead.
andemsp;andemsp;O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
(10)Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills,
andemsp;andemsp;For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths--for you the shores a-crowding,
andemsp;andemsp;For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
andemsp;andemsp; Here Captain! dear father!
andemsp;andemsp; This arm beneath your head!
(15) It is some dream that on the deck,
andemsp;andemsp; You've fallen cold and dead.
andemsp;andemsp;My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
andemsp;andemsp;My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
andemsp;andemsp;The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
(20)From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
andemsp;andemsp; Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
andemsp;andemsp; But I with mournful tread,
andemsp;andemsp; Walk the deck my Captain lies,
andemsp;andemsp; Fallen cold and dead.
