Teacher Compensation

COMPENSATION

Effective educators deserve to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments in the classroom.
Previously, districts awarded salary increases for seniority and academic credentials, no matter how well teachers performed. Teachers couldn’t get an increase when they did great work—something people can expect in almost any other profession. Recently passed legislation requires districts to build compensation systems based on effectiveness, demand and experience.

  • Effectiveness, which is based on a teacher’s evaluation.
  • Demand, such as working in a subject with a shortage of teachers or working in a hard-to-staff school.
  • Experience, including experience in the classroom and other relevant work experience.
  • The new system is designed to reward teachers who make the biggest impact on student achievement and allow
  • districts to take their priorities into account when deciding how to compensate teachers.
