The Tennessee Department of Education announced they would be developing their own Math Standards, and move away from the Common Core Standards that were adopted in 2011. The change is not as drastic this time around, Instead of starting from scratch, Tennessee has decided to base their new standards on the current Common Core Standards with revisions.

The Mid-Cumberland Math Consortium (comprised of area Math educators) has taken on the task of examining the new standards. In doing so, they are compiling information to assist school districts in understanding and implementing these standards. Their goal is to be able to help teachers identify the changes and adjust their educational plans accordingly.

The group is creating a grade by grade guide showing changes to the Math Standards for Tennessee. The new standards are set to go into effect in the 2017- 2018 school year.

The Consortium of educators has divided up the standard review by grade levels. They have spent the last few months reviewing and collaborating on them through Google docs, to create a color coded guide for teachers. The group will meet again in November to finalize the guides. They use basic colors to help identify the differences in the new standards.

Tennessee is another state that is still transitioning into their standards to align with federal law requiring states to develop rigorous standards to prepare students for college and the workforce after graduation.
