Standard:

Common Core State Standard: RL.3.2

Domain: Reading: Literature

Theme: Key Ideas and Details

Standard Description: Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

Question:

Read the two short fables to find the moral and choose your own point of view.

A. Once a gazelle was running as fast as she could possibly go to outrun a lion who was pursuing her. She had a good lead and was probably going to outrun the lion when she came to a river. Although she could swim, the water looked cold and uninviting. She hesitated on the bank of the river, not wanting to jump in. While she debated, the lion overtook her, and she became his dinner.

B. Once a gazelle was running as fast as she could possibly go to outrun a lion who was pursuing her. She had a good lead and was probably going to outrun the lion when she came to a river. Without looking, she jumped into the water where a crocodile was waiting, and she became his dinner.

What is the moral of Fable B?
