Lesson 4A: subordinate clauses and commas: an overview of phrases and clauses
By Tom Bailey
In this tutorial, I introduce my comma usage rule #4: If you start with and independent clause and finish with a subordinate clause, no comma is needed between the two clauses. If you start with the subordinate clause and end with the independent clause, you need place a comma after the subordinate clause. (This is the case because there is a pause after the subordinate clause when read.) With this in mind, this first lesson reviews the concept of what phrase is, what a clause is, and the difference between and independent and a subordinate clause are. Also, there is a great lesson on subordinating conjunctions in more detail here: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/conjunctions.htm The previous lesson in this series is located here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kdSO8Js4AA The next lesson is located here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnLGWUfFss
