Grandma's House

1 Nana’s house is very special.1 Grandma's house is like a treasure chest, filled with collections in every corner. When I was younger, I didn't pay much attention to them. But as I grew up, I started asking Grandma about her things.
2 In her kitchen, there's a bunch of stuff with horses on them. I asked Grandma why she collects them, and she told me that Dad gave her the first horse cookie jar when he was little. Now Dad is 36.
3 So, I went to the dining room and pointed to a teapot. I asked Grandma about it, and she chuckled but then shared a story.
4 A long time ago, when Grandma and Grandpa were dating, they used to go to a restaurant with a store inside. Grandma saw a teapot she liked, but it was too expensive. She hoped it would go on sale before her birthday, but it disappeared from the store. On her birthday, Grandpa surprised her with the teapot and a matching plate. One day, a small little baby elephant was happily dancing through the jungle, nodding his head and lifting up his trunk to trumpet loudly.

The loud sound woke up a monkey who was sleeping in a tree nearby. He was very angry. He scolded the elephant and asked him to keep quiet.

“You silly animal”, he said. “Can’t you keep quiet? I’m sleeping”.

“Oh, sorry”, said the little elephant and walked on. After sometime, the little elephant reached a river and saw some beautiful swans there. He gazed at the beautiful birds. The swans looked at him and began to laugh.

“Oh! Look at that big creature,” they said. “What a long nose, his ears are like fans, and look at his skin, it’s much too big for him. He looks like a big wrinkled bag with all of those folds!” They laughed at him, and swam away.

The little elephant was very sad. He tried to smooth out his skin with his trunk but it was no good. He thought, “Why am I so ugly?" "Let me hide myself so that no one can see me.”

He tried to hide in a thick bush but he disturbed some nests. The birds flew above his head crying loudly while trying to peck at him.

The little elephant ran for cover. He went behind a big rock to hide. Suddenly, he saw a big bear coming towards him. It was growling, and appeared to be very angry. The little elephant was very frightened and trumpeted loudly. Just as he trumpeted, he heard a loud crashing and stomping. A herd of wrinkled elephants came charging to the rescue.

Seeing the herd, the frightened bear ran away.

The little elephant joyfully ran to the big elephants, thanked them, and said, “I wish I could be like you. You’re so mighty and strong.” he continued.

“But you are,” replied the elephants “You’re a perfect little elephant.”

The little elephant danced for joy, he trumpeted loudly, and walked away happily with the other elephants following behind.

Maggie's Dilemma?

1 Maggie has many things to accomplish over the weekend. She wants to go to a friend’s house for a party on Sunday afternoon. If she doesn’t get her chores and homework done, she is afraid that her parents will not let her attend the party.

2 As she is getting ready for bed, Friday night, she is worrying and wondering how she can do everything before the party on Sunday. Her mother tells her that she needs to prioritize her life. Maggie is not sure what that means. She thinks to herself, “What is prioritize? How does that help me in my life?”

3 Her older brother, Ronny, comes into her room. He asks her, “Hey, Sis, why the puzzled look? Why are you just sitting there on your bed looking around your room?”

4 “Ronny, what does it mean when Mom tells me I need to prioritize my life?”

5 “What’s wrong with my life?”

6 Ron laughs and tells her that she has a tendency to try to do too much stuff in too little time. He suggests that she make a list of what she needs to do. Then, she needs to make a list of what she WANTS to do. Again, Maggie looks confused.

7 He takes out one of her notebooks and starts to write. She watches as he puts his name at the top of the list along with the words - Have to Do. Then he makes numbers going down each side. He writes, clean room as number 1. For number 2, he puts down, take out the trash. Ron then writes down, mow the yard for number 3.

8 On another sheet of paper he does the same thing, only this time after his name he writes- Want to Do. On the second list the number 1 is watch wrestling on TV. Number 2 is play video games.

9 Suddenly, Maggie gets it! “Oh, I see now. Prioritize means to put things in order of importance.”

10 Her brother replies, “Duh, I knew I could help out!” Ron laughs along with Maggie. She is no longer puzzled and starts to write.
