Six students have entered a chess competition. Each participant will play every other participant exactly once. How many games will have to be played in the competition? Be sure to clearly explain how you arrived at your answer.

On the day of the competition, one of the players does not show up. How many fewer games will be played, now that there is one less person in the competition?
