At the Museum
by Michael Signal

1 “Is it really that tall?” Simon asked the guide. “Of course it’s really that tall,” the guide responded. “You’re really looking at it.”

2 “Wow, that’s the rocket that sent people to the moon?” Simon questioned. “Well, Simon, that’s not the rocket that went to the moon” the guide explained. “The actual rocket that went to the moon was used up. It fell back to Earth in pieces. This one is a replica, but it’s exact to every detail.”

3 Simon couldn’t believe how tall the rocket was. It stretched higher than any building he had ever seen up close. “You seem impressed by the size,” the guide concluded. Then he said, “It’s taller than the Statue of Liberty.” Simon’s jaw dropped. He had never really seen the Statue of Liberty, but he knew it was huge.

4 “Can we go inside?” Simon wondered. “Inside the rocket museum?” the guide questioned back. “Inside the rocket?” Simon questioned, hoping the answer would be yes.

5 The guide laughed softly and said, “No, but there is a real Saturn V rocket in the museum. We can’t go in that one either.” Simon sighed in disappointment. The tour guide saw the look on his face and continued, “But we can walk under it. It’s lying flat, held up in the air with strong cables.” Simon’s attitude and face perked right up. “Let’s get in there,” he said.

6 The inside of the museum was more amazing than Simon could ever imagine. There were tons of rocket replicas, and even an actual capsule that carried astronauts safely home from the moon. “This one is the real deal,” the guide assured Simon.

7 When Simon’s parents told him they would spend their summer vacation visiting a museum, he didn’t think it would be fun at all. In fact, he tried to convince them to go to an amusement park, or a water park, or to go see an erupting volcano. The tour guide saw how happy Simon had become in the museum. Then he said, “Your parents didn’t tell you it was a rocket museum, did they?” “Nope,” Simon replied. They sure didn’t.

Arrange the phrases of events from the story in the correct sequence on the timeline.

A. The tour guide told Simon about the actual capsule that went to the moon.
B. The tour guide asked Simon if his parents had told him about the rocket museum.
C. Simon entered the museum.
D. Simon found out about a rocket taller than the Statue of Liberty.

Passage 1:

Timothy got a job walking dogs each morning. When school started this year, everyone encouraged him to quit his job, but he decided to keep it. He knew it would be hard to get up every morning at 5 a.m. in order to get all of the dogs walked and then go to school all day. In addition, he plans to sing in the chorus, play basketball, and be a mentor in the tutoring program this year. He knows it will not be easy, but he thinks his hard work will be worth it. He is trying to save enough money to go to a youth camp next summer.

Passage 2:

Adam likes to spend time with his friends. If he is not with them, he is texting them or playing games with them online. Adam is always busy. He cannot stand to sit around and do nothing. In fact, the only time he is still is when he is sleeping. Adam plays football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. He loves to be involved in whatever is going on at school or at the town’s youth center. He spends a lot of his time encouraging people to recycle and even volunteers at the youth center. Although he loves spending time with his friends, he is willing to give up time with them to help others.

Stanley loves to stay at home. He enjoys activities that can be done alone such as reading, drawing, and spending time with his dogs. Most days after school you can find him at home enjoying one of his favorite activities. He also thinks recycling is important and makes sure his family does it. Although he likes being alone, he enjoys volunteering at the youth center with his brother. He thinks it is important to make a difference in the lives of others, which is why he thinks he would like to be a doctor. Adam and Stanley may be different in many ways, but they join together and make a difference in their community.

If you compare and contrast Timothy and Adam, which statement is correct? Highlight the correct answer choice

  1. Timothy participates in extracurricular activities, but Adam does not.
  2. Timothy does not participate in extracurricular activities, but Adam does.
  3. Timothy and Adam both participate in extracurricular activities.
  4. Neither Timothy nor Adam participates in extracurricular activities.

Rules of War
by Michael Signal

1 A war happens when military forces from different countries battle each other. Wars produce tremendous damage, countless injuries, and many deaths. When two different armies fight each other, each side wants to win, but there are actually guidelines that countries are supposed to follow during wartime. There are rules about how to start a war, how to fight a war, and how to end a war. It’s weird to think about, but warfare actually has rules that countries are supposed to follow.

2 Everyone has disagreements; the same thing is true with countries. But when two countries have a disagreement, things can sometimes turn very serious. When countries can’t resolve their differences, they may actually go to war over them. One thing a country is supposed to do before it attacks another country, is to make a formal declaration of war. A declaration of war is a document that explains that one country is going to attack another country. Sometimes a declaration of war will offer conditions to avoid a war, or things one country can do to convince another country not to start a war. A declaration of war gives countries an opportunity to keep more people safe by preparing for war, or even to avoid a war before it starts.

3 Sometimes countries don’t manage to avoid wars. If a war does start, the countries involved are supposed to follow certain rules of warfare. Many of these rules are designed to protect soldiers, but other rules help to keep civilians safe. These rules ban the most dangerous types of weapons. They also state that war prisoners must not be tortured or treated cruelly. Soldiers are also not allowed to attack civilians or use civilians for protection. Wars are very dangerous, but these rules can prevent some suffering.

4 Just as the rules say that a war should start with an official document, a war should also end with an official document. Sometimes a war ends when one side surrenders to the other. Other times, both sides might agree that the war should end, even if neither country seems to have won the war. In either case, both sides must agree to a peace treaty. A peace treaty is a promise between countries that they will not fight against each other anymore. Most treaties have conditions that each side must follow. If either side breaks part of the treaty, a war could start again.

5 Maybe one day, there won’t be any more wars, but that time probably won’t come soon. As long as soldiers continue to fight each other, rules of warfare can help to keep as many people safe as possible. Unfortunately, some countries and soldiers don’t follow the rules. These rules won’t stop people from dying or being hurt during wartime, but they can save lives and reduce suffering among soldiers and civilians.
